Basil is an experienced Financial Manager having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in South Africa and Canada with Arthur Andersen and Touche Ross, respectively (1974-1981), gaining considerable audit and industry experience.In 1981, Basil accepted the role of Vice President Finance of a publicly listed technology company in Montreal. In 1984, he relocated to London and joined Deloitte Haskins and Sells, Management Consultancy, as Senior Financial Consultant. In 1987, Basil joined SBCI (Swiss Bank Corporation Investment Bank) as Chief Accountant; in 1989 and after the merger of the commercial and investment banks he was appointed Financial Controller of SBC London.After the acquisition of Warburg and O’Connor Derivatives in the early 1990s, SBC restructured from a location-based to a global functional structure. Basil became Head of Global Capital Adequacy for SBC Warburg under the Swiss EBK Capital Rules. He maintained this position following the UBS/SBC merger in 1998.
Since 1995, Basil implemented, from a financial reporting perspective, both Basel 1 and Basel 11 globally for the Investment bank and provided the infrastructure for Basel 111 through January 2013. During this period, Basil: created a Capital Help Desk which provided advisory services to the Business and Finance on the optimal usage of Regulatory Capital; and coordinated Cross Functional workshops and task forces involving the Business, Risk functions and Logistics to reduce Risk Weighted Assets (RWA) through active management, data remediation and risk initiatives.
In addition, Basil was responsible for training across the Business and Finance for the migration of Basel 1 to Basel 111, the associated RWA calculations and the most efficient usage of optimisation of Tier one ratios.
